It's been a pleasant wander around the last few remaining bookshops in west London, stopping off in Waterstone's to peruse the laughable tome that is XFM's 1000 best songs. I wonder if it would have been such a poor effort if Capital radio hadn't sullied the XFM brand. Can anyone seriously consider the Wonder Stuff's Size Of A Cow as their best moment? Practically every previous single was superior to that nonsense which one suspects was written around a title dreamed up over a failed evening of cow-tipping. Further proof of the inadequacy of the compilers is the choice of I'm Free as the sole representative of the exceedingly disappointing Soup Dragons. They started their career brightly with such jaunty ditties as Swirling Round The Garden, Whole Wide World and Hang Ten before descending into the darkened cellar of ordinariness in order to gain public recognition, which worked for a brief time. The real question is if either of these groups could squeeze but one song into a top 1000.

Having evacuated those thoughts from my troubled mind I'll return to the mysterious case of Tac-Tix and probably their only 7" release, Whisper On The Street/See The Love, which generated enough interest to sell for £165 though there were only three bids. They hailed from Guildford apparently and released this in 1988 on the R.E.Good label. Seller Strike Up Matches has a good pedigree with C86 devotees but judging by the sleeve this could be as big a dud as the Y Do I single.

Johnny Solo can now afford to buy a boat.

It's been a while since the Johnny Solo single has appeared on ebay or so I thought until I did a bit of research. It was on in July and sold for £5.99. Now a few months later it returns and sells for £110. The cheap one was listed under reggae/ska, this latest was in the punk/powerpop category. Did that make a difference? Yellow Dinghy is, I think, their only release on 7" and I'd like it myself to add to my list of "yellow" songs : I Like Yellow Things, Alone In My Yellow, Mellow Yellow, Yellow And Red, The Colour Yellow..............................

Unbelievably a couple of years back this single was available as a buy it now from a usually very clued-up dealer. For how much you ask? £200. Yesterday it sold for £1,020. This is the highest price I've seen paid for a punk single by a fairly anonymous outfit. Legendary it is though and I wonder who shelled out a grand for it. The Stereotypes released this four track 7" on Hinterland, their own label, and it's crude no-nonsense punk but with this artifact it's not about the quality, it's about the scarcity, probably only a hundred pressed. Tracks are Parisian, Telephone Affair, Countdown and Champagne Suicide.

Cypress, Mine! as expensive as a tin mine

Returned in time for that ho ho ho time of year. An obscure Irish band Cypress, Mine! rarely appear on ebay but avid indiepop fans get all in a tizz when they do. This 7" sports three tracks, Justine, Sounds Like Rain and Funny Street. I'd hazard a guess that this is probably bound for Japan as it is usually only oriental magpies that pay £296.54 for a single.

Who The Hell Does Jane Smith Think She Is? fetches a remarkable £122. Really astonishing as it isn't that hard to locate. Well I can only speak from my experience of finding the 12" in MVE for
£1 about three years ago. I also have the 7". I think this was their only release and it has sold for a lot less in the past.

Newquay where can be found many a muscled moron aboard an oversized tea tray. But back in 1973 one imagines a more sedate visitor who might well have relaxed whilst being aurally caressed by the singers, instrumentalists, composers and arrangers of Newquay School expressing themselves in myriad ways on the lp Nearly All Our Own Work. Among the usual dalliances with Broadway standards and trad ar lurk a few originals, pick of which is a throat-growling number called Do You Wanna Try It? Probably recorded after all the kids had been packed off to bed it sounds like one of the dads with an Iggy fixation snuck into the studio and had an attack of the Joe Strummers. A little lumpen but the guitar is as heavy as fury. I won't claim that Kevin Calcutt, the writer, invented punk but he must have connected with it a few years later. The following track Sunrise returns to the prevailing mood of the era, pleasant wispy folk. I dug this up in a charity shop in Oxford for £2. Then I saw a copy on ebay which sold for £120.

Who are the Guests? I lost the courage to bid on this as it ascended the financial ladder resting on the £205 rung. This single was released in 1980 on A Label Called Mabel and consisted of four tracks, Hit The Scene, Live In, Melt Down and Impressing The Press. They also had a track on a comp called Owt For Nowt which sold a few days later for £95.53.

Big price paid for a single by Moonstruck. Modboy was the seller so interest was strong especially as he talked this one up claiming it to be one of the last powerpop/punk unknowns from the era. Regular readers of this blog may contest that claim. I have never heard it, or of it until this auction which attracted a flurry of bids. It was a promo and there were no titles on the label and Modboy only knew one, It's Just A Matter Of Time ( Before They Drop The Bomb ). Unclear who was going to drop the bomb but sounds a promising title. Only a 100 pressed. Sold for £335.

So finally after hope double-dashed a copy of On The Waterfront, an Essex band from the mid 80's, appears on ebay. I first acquainted myself with this elusive 12" in a charity shop about three years ago. Flicking through the usual morass of Mozart, Beethoven and Wunderlich I was all agog when said band's only masterwork massaged my defeated eyes. Joy and rapture, or at least mild excitement, overcame me. Then frustration as the record had eloped from it's sleeve's needy clasp. In vain I pulled out records from other sleeves but my vigour, though valiant and persistent, yielded no reward. In the following months I would sporadically visit the charity shop and hunt yet again until one day the sleeve disappeared too. My second meeting with the record was at Olympia record fair. The dealer sold it to me for a reasonable £5. I glanced at the condition and happily took it home. About to play it I realised that it was the wrong record, it was on the same label, Wizz, but it was their second release not the first which On The Waterfront is. Deflated I resorted to admitting that the cruel twists and tangos of farcical fate had conquered me.

A few months later and up it crops on ebay. I even meet the dealer who is selling it at a record fair who assures me that he'd tried to sell it before and nobody was interested. I'm cautiously optimistic though I note that it does have one bid. Come the auction countdown there is suddenly a little more interest. The dealer's words are rotating in my head until they spin themselves into oblivion and the final price is £191.61. This is not my bid. I'm outgunned in the last seconds. I'm more bewildered than fed up, and soon my natural perversity kicks in and I'm amused. I'll laugh and by doing so befriend my foe fate.

Within a month the single reappears on ebay. No doubt the seller has seen an extravagant sum paid for this indie jewel and wants a piece of the pie. I'm expecting rivals but doubting it will zoom up to the giddy heights of the previous auction. Come the day and there has been no interest shown. As the final minutes tiptoe by I man the keyboard with trepidation. Into the final seconds and still no bidding activity. This is bizarre. I glance at the seller's feedback. 100%. Suddenly it's all over and I'm the only bidder. Record won for £1.50. And yes it did arrive in the post, and not in pieces, and it played perfectly.

£99 was the sale price for this rollicking piece of powerpop by The Form. Released on Elephant records in 1980 the single offered three tracks, Watch Out, Start Again and London Underground. Nothing more came from their particular school of music. Got my copy for a quarter of the sale price in Rat Records, Camberwell about a year ago, excuse my smugness.

No idea where ebay seller Strike Up Matches sources his stuff from but it always attracts interest. Also wonder how much of it is really top notch C86 style indie. For instance The Recruits maybe as dire as Y Do I although Mr. Matches likens them to The Jeremiahs and Where Gardens Fall which was enough to get two bidders attention. The single was released in 1989 and the titles were See My Face/Dream Heaven Scene. Sold for £86.

Are we being misled here? The Monk Bought Lunch is apparently a C86 humdinger that ardent fans of indiepop must own. Three tracks, Love And Hate, Paint It White ( perhaps an answer record to the old Stones classic ) and The Sailor's Tilted Hat ( some sort of secret homosexual code perhaps ) struck a jaunty chord with a few and so this independently released 7" from 1991 sold for £122.

Have recently returned from New Zealand where I was fortunate enough to evade any falling rubble. On the North Island when the quake struck, a week earlier we had been in Christchurch. So sad to see so many lives lost.

Back to more mundane matters and the English McCoy 12" makes an extremely rare appearance on ebay. Expected this to cause minor disturbances in deep pockets and it lived up to expectations selling for £375.10. I put in a pallid bid of £62. I'll just have to console myself with giving the 7" a spin.

Picked this Hot Rain single up in a charity shop about a year ago for £1. Based, I believe, in Southport, they made pleasant indiepop which has traces of the Prefab Sprout minus the arch lyrics. So a little pallid for some tastes, yet this achieved a reasonable return for seller Modboy of £37.

Having not yet located the Holy Grail this will have to suffice as a replacement which, in indiepop circles, it most certainly is. The Wee Cherubs supped from a similar chalice to fellow Scots Orange Juice if a little more anaemic in sound but that might be down to the rather primitive production. The single was released on Bogaten, according to the catalogue number the second release on said label, so what was the first? Apparently, due to lack of sales, several hundred copies of the single were dumped so estimates vary about how many exist but I'd guess around 600. Having won the single a few weeks back for a hefty £381 I was mildly miffed to see this copy undercut my winning bid by £16 (for those lacking a mathematical brain the sale price was £365). Listening to it I almost conjured up my former malnutritioned indie kid self though once it ended I noted that my middle age protuberance still jutted gently outward. Mickey Rourke's Fridge was not only a home to the mighty Hey Paulette but also The Dadas from Dublin. Their 12" contained three songs Mercy Mercy/Skyscrapers/Maybe. This may have been long past its best before date, circa 1992, but bidders still had an appetite for it; it sold for £92.

We might need an Ozone Farm. No idea who this lot were but I suspect they may have just the one release to their name. The Ozone Farm/Sail The Sea was released in 1986 and interest then, as now, was minimal as this sold for the starting price £1.99. According to the seller this is indie/Britpop despite the fact the latter genre was many years down the road. So what was life like on the ozone farm, specifically what did this lot sound like?

Some vampiric vinyl collector, possibly located east of Vladivostok, snatched the Candy Ranch single from me in the dying seconds of the auction. Reasoning that the last time this sold it stuttered around the £65 mark I was a little complacent and therefore had to suffer miseries as this went elsewhere for the steep sum of £173. It's very likely I'll have to wait another four years before this reappears. Released around late eighties/nineties on Tumak & Sons records in a picture sleeve with a shunter adorning it Section 58/Screaming Nutter trundled down a branch line to nowhere and remained neglected in some abandoned sidings, only a few collectors interested in jotting down its number.

Want to mourn the modern world? Try the Isle of Wight, that undisturbed splodge beneath the knee of England, where a thick patina of the past prevents the present from imposing its empty gloss upon it. Home also to the Pumphouse Gang and Trixie's Big Red Motorbike, artistes that may as well have been based on the Falklands for all their influence on the mainland. Equally ignored, despite a convivial letter addressed to Go! Discs tucked inside the sleeve of my copy of their single, was The Attic, hopefully not named after the Adrian Gurvitz non-classic Classic. Little information is given on the sleeve. All three songs, The Final Thrill, Excuse To The World and The Cradle, appear to be originals written by the mysterious triumvirate of Arnell, Adams and Beasley.

The single was recorded in the summer of 1987 and came out on Picnic records.

Two People struggled to make any inroads into 1980's pop land despite releasing a handful of tantalisingly tuneful singles, the best of which were This Is The Shirt and this one, Mouth Of An Angel, which sold for a moderate £13.50. B side Let's Raise Murder is equally as good. This was a lucky find for me in a charity shop for the insubstantial sum of 50p.

I'm fairly certain that everything on this lp by Bob Hope, I Hope The Sky Falls On Her Head, appears on Accident's The Patron Saint Of Adultery compilation which has a marginally more fetching cover of a woman in her underwear ( depending on your sexual preference ), which is perhaps a reference to that infamous night when the real Bob Hope compered Miss World and outraged feminists stormed the stage. Poor Bob was shaken and had to muster all his Hollywood bluster to righteously decry the harpies. If only feminists would storm the stage when misogynstic rappers start ranting on about bitches and hos. Whatever happened to the noble occupation of protesting? Meanwhile this sold for £66.99.

INDIETRACKS---I want to live in an Indietracks world

The Indietracks weekend started for us on Thursday. We surged past Nottingham, briefly stopping at a few charity shops on Mansfield Road as a filip for our dismay at Anarchy Records being closed, before chugging on to Sheffield. There we partook of refreshment at our friend Jeanette's house. She has just completed a book on acid/psych folk and looked rather exhausted. Itching to finger dusty old records I excused myself and rushed off to Record Collector before it shut. Friday saw us depart Sheffield, a few records heavier as Jeanette had kindly given me some of her unwanted singles, Bunnygrunt, Rondelles, Comet Gain etc. We turned up at the Premier Inn to be terrorized by a giant cutout of Lenny Henry and an armada of Spanish indiepop types.

We arrived on site as the sun kindly threw a few chipped rays of light over the festival. Veronica Falls kicked off the weekend quite quietly due to a few sound problems but soon delivered several punchy tunes. Allo Darlin' bestrode the stage like a gentle behometh, Silver Dollars sounding like the song of the festival already. Headliners Everybody Was In The French Resistance....Now had front man Eddie Argos laughing at his own wonderfulness but had me wondering why he wasn't propping up the bill. Funny men in pop are as rare as coppers with a sense of humour, that lot from the Wirral can do it and so can M J Hibbet, Mr.Argos has as heavy a touch as one of his catalogues.

Post bands we hauled our weary bodies to Offbeat in the shed. Scuppered by poor sound we still shuffled our inept feet to a few indie classics. For a change of scene we wandered over to Come Out 2Nite in the marquee. Ever danced on nuggets of coal before? Maybe we were tenderizing them for the hungry steam trains. Dancing on stony ground to Johnny Boy's You Are The Generation That Bought More Shoes seemed entirely appropriate especially the line "And you get what you deserve." Entirely inappropriate was Madonna's Into The Groove. It's an indie disco, no need to pander to the ignorant majority who don't know their Field Mice from their Field Trip.

Saturday started off awash with sunshine and then July mimicked October. Somehow we missed The Hillfields and most of Red Shoe Diaries but could they have bettered The Felt Tips? These Scottish lads were surely going to be the champions of the festival with their achingly arch songs about sex and Morrissey. But then along came The Cavalcade with their songs of rain-rinsed days in forsaken towns, of souls tortured by a captivity they've created for themselves to seek some twisted comfort. Outside clouds came to listen. But that was sunday, saturday still had several delights in the shape of the untamed energy of Betty & The Werewolves and The Give It Ups, boldly ramshackle and unformed. The Just Joans had yet another swipe at Morrissey, what is this fascination Scottish bands have with the old queen? Missed the Smittens, no doubt all glee and twee, but did mostly enjoy the leisurely pop of The Orchids; sometimes their sound is a little too sedate, like a supper club band for nonagenarians. Ballboy we heard from the car as we tried to remind ourselves what it was like to be warm. Even from afar they sounded good. Hurried back for Tender Trap but apart from Oh Katrina and the new single they failed to make me sway or swoon. Forgive me Amelia, it can't be you, it must be me. Rounded the day off with a dose of The Primitives, Tracy Tracy looking like an unsoiled Brix Smith. Not entirely engaged until I heard a succession of hits and Nothing Left. A quick shimmy to some shiny tunes spun by the very capable Astrogirl and then back to the menacing cardboard Lenny Henry.

The Indietracks train was inexorably approaching the terminus and parts of my brain were already anticipating the anti-climax of monday morning. No shabby sunshine, all blue skies, but the day would darken, mirroring the growing gloom in me as I knew this fabulous weekend was soon to end. We wandered among the buses and the trains, locating bits of my lost childhood, shreds of it coagulating into a confused whole, before heading back for the quiz. This meant missing the splendid M J Hibbett, perhaps a mistake as our quiz performance would have brought the wrath of Ann Robinson down upon us, "White Town had the highest chart position of any Indietracks band, not The Primitives, who can't tell the difference between his no.1's and his no.2's?" Cloaked in the rags of defeat we cheered ourselves up with the spectacular beauty of The Cavalcade who spun webs of shimmering melody in the church. Most of our remaining hours were spent getting ever chillier under the wasp tree watching The Loves and their buxom dancers, the criminally under-attended Cannanes, the splendid Standard Fare, the shrill Shrag who seemed incapable of introducing songs without foul imprecations, the two children sitting near us loved them. Missed Slow Club, by all accounts a mistake, but did turn up with the Swansea collective to see The Pooh Sticks, a band I've sort of overlooked for years, but with their homemade placards displaying song titles and their recruitment of Amelia they passed the time. It was when they played On Tape that they suddenly won me over. Shame it was their last song. The Pains Of Being Pure At Heart closed the festival and they sounded better live than on record. The new material was as uplifting and vital as the older stuff. They kicked off with This Love Is Fucking Right and I knew my love for them was right too. I felt an errant tear stroll down my cheek as I knew these ecstatic days in Derbyshire were coming to an end. We delayed the inevitable comedown dancing to Joy Division and Talking Heads but we knew when the dull spectre of Bruce Springsteen haunted the decks that the real world, that icy world of a celebrity-saturated media, the Simon Cowell corporate leviathan and R & B sludge silting up the charts, was soon to impinge on our little village-like idyll.

Goodbye Indietracks-till next year.

Seller claims to have rescued this Obtainers single from Crawley tip. (I remember buying my copy in a long defunct record shop in Putney on the strength of a favourable review in the NME). Quite what he or she was doing scrambling around in such an environment one can only wonder though perhaps this will encourage legions of record collectors to get down and dirty in their local waste. I'd advise against it as there are enough wee-smelling sorts ambling around record fairs, my stamina for stinky obsessives can only extend so far; what is it with some collectors, are they afraid of soap? Anyway despite last month's Record Collector featuring this single with a price tag of £1000 the Crawley-tip crawler secures under half that, £454.

Obviously he has a secret chamber where he keeps his more interesting stuff. Nick appears to have originated from the Southwold area of Suffolk; I suspect there's a junk shop in the vicinity that's overflowing with gently crushed copies of Nick's single. Sold for £42.89, possibly because bidders confused Mr Haward with his near namesake Nick Heyward.

I doubted the existence of this despite it featuring in the estimable 45 Revs. A spoof, and a gloriously tasteless one at that. But I've been assured the Morning Spunk single does it exist; a copy sold on ebay about a year ago. Apparently the funsters behind this were not an offshoot of the Pork Dukes but former members of the Renegades, a British beat/R&B band who, failing to win hearts in the UK, did what so many other ignored British bands did, hawked their wares around Europe, wowing the Scandinavians before pitching up in Italy where they became stars by rousing the natives with some 50's R'n'R revival. If that didn't alarm the San Remo types their cash-in incarnation cover of Sex & Drugs & Rock & Roll certainly left them incensed and probably inspired a youngish Silvio Berlusconi. The single flopped; somehow the snotty snobby Italians were unimpressed and scurried back to their opera seats. Sold for £41.77. And I won it.

Lucky bidders were treated to an excerpt of this Kitchen And The Plastic Spoons single which was released in 1980 in, claimed the seller, a measly batch of 300. The A side, Happy Funeral, is manic synth punk which reminds me of Devo being forced to perform Model Citizens songs at gunpoint. Some Swedes were behind this and the record came with an A4 size trading card featuring a picture of Elizabeth Taylor;apparently each single had a different card. Sold for £129.22.

Not an offshoot of the Cortinas, the Escorts was a less prolific brand made in the powerpop mould. A rare model, their only single was seldom seen and some doubted its existence. The Escorts was manufactured in Melbourne, Derbyshire and only a few hundred miles worth of gigs were clocked up before the engine went phut. Bingo is a cry of despair, an outrage at the rise of the bingo hall, usually at the expense of the local cinema, which broke out like a plague of boils on a seventies Britain that eyed culture with contempt and suspicion. Team this up with The Fall's Bingo Master's Breakout, Mr DJ, and be the envy of the lone geek exiled in anorak corner at some cool retro club.

Band members were Dave T vocals, Bob W guitar, Anthony G bass and Andrew S drums. The record was released in 1980 or thereabouts on Rainbow Sound, the name of the studio in Nottingham where it was recorded.

Active in the mid to late eighties Playing For Time released their only single on their own Thumbs Up label in 1989 in a pressing of 1000. Rarely seen, if at all, on ebay, this was its second appearance within a few weeks. First time out the seller, a former band member, failed to list it internationally and as that sale drew to a close he was bombarded with frustrated emails from Japan. I happily plucked it from furious Orientals at its starting price. Getting wise to the workings of ebay he listed another copy and this time reaped a bulky reward of £351.50. The C86-loving label Firestation Towers may put out a cd of unreleased material but nothing has yet been finalized.

Maybe it was because the seller only had 98.8% positive feedback that this rare pop gem by the Hardy Boys sold for a meagre £69.90. And it was free postage from Japan.
